Geography Intent:
At The Federation of Longhorsley and Whalton C of E Schools, we prioritise fostering a deep understanding of geography and spatial awareness in our children through engaging learning experiences. In the Early Years, children begin their exploration of geography through simple activities that introduce them to basic geographical concepts and spatial relationships. They engage in age-appropriate experiences that lay the foundation for their understanding of the world around them.
Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum guidelines for Geography across Key Stages 1 and 2, outlining the essential geographical skills children should acquire during their lessons. We provide structured opportunities for inquiry and investigation, encouraging children to explore and analyse maps, interpret geographical data, and develop their geographical knowledge and understanding.
Alongside acquiring geographical knowledge, our geography curriculum also promotes an appreciation for the diversity and interconnectedness of the natural and human world. Children explore key geographical themes such as physical landscapes, human settlements, environmental sustainability, and global issues.
Furthermore, students engage in the study of geographical processes and patterns, learning to analyse spatial distributions, identify geographical features, and understand the interactions between humans and their environments.
At our school, children engage in a variety of activities that deepen their understanding of geography, including fieldwork, map skills, and investigations into geographical phenomena. These experiences not only develop their geographical skills but also foster their curiosity, critical thinking, and appreciation for the complexity of the world.
We are committed to preparing our children to become informed and responsible global citizens, capable of understanding and addressing the challenges facing our planet. Whether they’re exploring local landscapes, studying global climate patterns, or investigating cultural diversity, our children are equipped to engage with the world through their geographical knowledge and understanding.
David Attenborough stated, “Surely, we have a responsibility to care for our planet. The future of humanity and indeed all life on earth, now depends on us.” Children need a deep understanding of how to protect our ecosystem and planet and show respect on a global scale.
