Longhorsley First School PE OverviewDownload

Intent:

At our schools, we aim for our PE to inspire children to enjoy being active, develop healthy lifestyles, and gain confidence in a wide range of physical activities. We aim to nurture teamwork, resilience, and personal achievement while encouraging lifelong participation in sport and fitness.  We try to offer a varied sports offer to engage all learners and find something for everyone to enjoy.

We have been awarded Gold!  We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, throwing, catching – focusing on their speed, agility and coordination)
  • Participate in team games and individual challenges
  • Understand the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing
  • Develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of fair play
  • Explore a range of sports and physical activities

Implementation:

  • EYFS: Children develop basic movement skills through both lessons and play, exploring balance, coordination, and agility with both indoor and outdoor activities
  • KS1: Pupils build on basic skills through structured PE lessons, including gymnastics, dance, swimming, netball, basketball, skipping, football, rugby and simple athletics – including running, throwing and jumping
  • KS2: Pupils refine and apply skills in team games, athletics, swimming, dance, gymnastics, netball, rugby, football and outdoor adventurous activities (including Bikeability, orienteering and for children in Year 4  – A Residential Visit). They also develop tactical awareness, leadership, and personal goal setting

Teaching approaches include:

  • Skill development through progressive lessons
  • Fitness and health education
  • Teamwork, cooperation, and leadership activities (links to our CoJo)
  • Extra-curricular clubs and sports competitions – the vast majority are organised through our School PE Programme Teacher and School Games Organiser Mrs Lee Turner for events both in the Morpeth and Ponteland Partnership.  We have also begun to attend events with our Font Alliance Partnership too
  • Use of local facilities (Longhorsley Muga), playgrounds (2 at Longhorsley), and sports resources (we are well equipped to deliver our curriculum)

Impact:

Children will:

  • Demonstrate improved physical skills and fitness and understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle
  • Work collaboratively and fairly with others, including addressing the RESPECT curriculum
  • Show resilience and confidence in challenging tasks
  • Enjoy participation in a variety of sports and activities

Impact is monitored through:

  • Teacher assessments and observation (using the Hand, Head and Heart adopted from the Schools Sport Partnership)
  • Participation in intra- and inter-school competitions, the the School Sports Partnership or Font Alliance
  • Pupil self-evaluation and reflection
  • Progression in skill acquisition and confidence
