Science

Intent:

An enquiry based Science Curriculum across the Federation of Longhorsley and Whalton CofE Schools provides an opportunity for children to act as co-constructors of their Science lessons. It enables children to personalise their Science education; overcoming barriers to their learning themselves, enhancing their use of vocabulary in their reasoning.

Through this approach, children are encouraged to research, investigate and problem-solve to inform their learning. Children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and become engaged, independent and motivated.

Each year group follows a topic for a term or half term. Within the topic, the teacher plans for learning opportunities using children’s previous knowledge and their interests.

The National Curriculum specifies that primary school children should work towards providing the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Across the Federation, the topics cover not only scientific aspects of the National Curriculum, but are fundamentally cross curricular; incorporating all aspects of learning. Diagnostic assessments are given at the beginning of a Unit, along with on-going formative assessments within class teaching and learning, before children create a two-page independent portfolio of their learning as a whole, at the end of a Unit.
